The government today approved the proposal of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic and will allocate from its reserve the first part of the funds that will help Banská Štiavnica recover from a large fire. The town will receive EUR 4 million in the first payment.
The money is primarily intended to repair one of the most damaged buildings, which is owned by the town. It is the Szitnyai House from the 16th century, which also housed an elementary art school. The building is a national cultural monument and therefore it is a priority that all historical aspects of the building are preserved after a comprehensive reconstruction. The fire practically damaged the entire building. The façade, interior and internal equipment.
“I am glad that we have once again confirmed that we can react efficiently and, above all, quickly. Banská Štiavnica is one of our jewels and we will do everything we can to help the town in these difficult times,” said Eduard Heger, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, after the government meeting.
At its meeting directly in the town at the beginning of April, the government confirmed its intention to help Banská Štiavnica. Already at that time, the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic allocated in the budget the sum of EUR 7 million for the Ministry of Interior and Environment to reimburse the necessary costs.
A large-scale fire on 18 March 2023 damaged a total of seven historic buildings in the centre of Banská Štiavnica.
